The day started hot and muggy. I took a walk with M down the beach and we returned sweaty and tired, despite not venturing all that far.
After lunch, we headed into Wellington intent on seeing a cricket match between a Wellington team and a team from the central area of the North Island (maybe Palmerston?) Unfortunately, by the time we arrived in Wellington--just 30 or so miles away--it was cold and rainy--a stunning change in weather that happened over the space of just an hour or so as a weather front moved through. So we stopped at Te Papa museum and toured the earthquake/natural disasters exhibit and (for the second time!) the cafe. At that point, CS and ZC called to say that the cricket would start within 40 minutes or so. We left Te Papa and drove the short distance to the outdoor, medium-sized cricket stadium.
By this point, it was cold, windy, and damp, though not actually raining.
The game was surprisingly entertaining--18 overs per side, rapid fire, with more runs concentrated in a small time period than I've seen on any televised cricket. The Wellington team scored 213 in their innings. The other team countered with 164 (?) so something of a blowout.
It was so cold that DC headed off to see if there were any t-shirts to buy for warmth. I was expecting them to be very expensive, but they were just $7 a shirt. So we ended up buying 6 of them! Pictures below are pre-t-shirt....
