DS, HS, and RS arrived in the morning, and we all headed off right away to the most southerly part of the north island...Cape Palliser. We stopped en route at Lake Ferry for lunch at a pleasant eatery located where Lake Wairarapa drains into the ocean.
A sunny, breezy, cool day at the beach....

| The surf is a dramatic collision between the lake water and the sea. The photo doesn't do it justice--it looked incredibly powerful and dangerous. |
We drove on from there to the seal colony at Cape Palliser, home to lots of seals who seemed pretty used to humans gawking at them.
They were scattered over a large rocky area, sometimes tucked into crevices:
It was slightly worrying scrambling around the rocks, because sometimes you'd suddenly come across a seal/seal cub, and the big male seals were huge and could clearly do some damage if they felt like it. The seal cubs were incredibly cute. CC did his best to compete by posing on a rock and then in front of a rock:
From here, on to Cape Palliser's light house. Quite a climb to get there!
Back at the cottages, I'm pretty sure it was cloudy again, and I'm 100% sure it was windy. We grilled up some meat and played lots and lots of games.
Oh, and celebrated MC's 15th birthday! And managed to stay up till midnight to toast the new year.
